Essential Oils are pure, natural products obtained by distilling or pressing herbs, spices, flowers and citrus fruits.
They have been defined as the “hormones” or “life’s blood” of a plant for their extremely concentrated and essential characteristics.

Use of essential oils and their distillation has been documented as far back as 5,000 years ago. Virtually every civilization since antiquity has used essential oils for incense, perfumes, cosmetics, as natural medical remedies and for their culinary virtues.

Essential oils contain only the pure flavour of the plant without extraneous flavours that are often contained in the fibrous material of the plant. They are volatile substances. Think of peeling an orange. The tiny drops of oil fill the air with the characteristic aroma before quickly dissipating. To capture these aromas, Marsilio mixes the essential oils with its highest quality extra virgin olive oil.

Because essential oils are lipophilic substances they mix perfectly with extra virgin olive oil creating an oil with a strong, pure flavour and a notably high resistance to oxidation. The plants themselves, on the other hand, are for the most part hydrophilic substances which, if added to the Olive’s Oil, cause rapid oxidation and a rapid decline in quality of the olive oil.

Essential oils are natural products with a clean, pure flavour that make possible a deep revitalization of the body. Chemical aromatic products, on the other hand, are “dead” substances, therefore dangerous and also disruptive to the vital natural metabolic system.

As with all of its products, Marsilio’s high standards and quality control are imposed from the field to the bottle.

The natural essential oils used by Marsilio are obtained from plants chosen according to a rigorous botanical identification in order to ensure that the variety will provide essential oils of excellent quality.

The plants are cultivated in areas carefully selected to favour the production of high profile essential oils. For example, our chilli peppers are grown on an organic farm in the south of Egypt, our organic basil is grown in the south of Spain, the roses are cultivated near the Caspian Sea.

Marsilio essential oils, whether from organic or regular cultivation, are subjected to rigorous analytic controls to prove the absolute absence of substances derived from the use of chemical products.

Our oils of Lemon, Sweet Orange, Basil, Black Pepper, Chilli Pepper and Porcini Mushroom are certified organic while the others, even if cultivated with the same criteria, are not certified organic because the producers have chosen to not apply for certification.

The plants are harvested when they are most rich in essences. For example, our rosemary is harvested before the first flowering; basil is harvested before 10am; roes petals are gathered when the flowers open, after the morning dew but before the noon heat.

Extraction, whether by distillation or pressure, is performed by experienced technicians using the best materials and highest technology – stills are made of aisi 316 stainless steel, pressing takes place in a vacuum chamber – in order to guarantee high quality and avoid the risks of oxidation. Most of our essential oils are obtained through distillation except the oils of Lemon, Sweet Orange, Chilli Pepper and Porcini Mushroom which are obtained by pressing.

Res is the Essential Oil, softly filtered, vacuum packed in dark green glass bottles and conserved at 16 degrees Centigrade.
